Back to Black (Gloss), 2013
Back to Black (Gloss) is a signed limited edition silkscreen print with black glazes by Joe Webb. Printed at Coriander Studio and published by CCA Galleries. This artwork is also available in a diamond dust version.
Back to BlackĀ celebrates the beauty of the female form with nothing to distract from it. Webbās image epitomizes understated elegance and glamour, with the simplicity of a female figure set against a black background. The delicate sparkle of diamond dust on her jewels adds an extra layer of refinement. By excluding most of the face, the figure becomes anonymous, shifting the focus entirely to the shape and form of the body. When examined objectively, the body parts appear to float in space, taking on an almost abstract quality.
"Back to Black is taken from a series of new collages Iāve recently made. Thereās a continuous unbroken line throughout the body parts... itās my most minimal work yet, with only the flesh of the subject left, producing an almost abstract shape. These were inspired in part by Henri Matisseās āBlue Nudeā cutouts. I love Matisseās idea of āpainting with scissorsā and how his work became minimal and concise in his later years. I enjoy referencing other artistsā works and then taking them somewhere else.ā ā Joe Webb
