Cellar Door
Contemporary artist Dan Hillier trawls through scraps of Victoriana - from wood cuts to etchings, engravings to anatomical drawings - layering pieces from the past in a digital collage process to produce an aesthetic which blends Surrealism and Neo-Victoriana.
Cellar Door depicts a cut-out image of an Edwardian gentleman posing for the camera. Yet Hillier upsets the traditional portrait with an eerie twist, as the outline of the sitter's form contains a dark garden, and an Escher-like set of stairways where the silhouetted figures of a woman and child encounter a half-stag half-child in a fragmented, dreamy scene.
Rendered in monochrome, with the sketchy quality of an antique etching, Hillier's Cellar Door is both beautiful and haunting.
This is a hand-pulled, signed and numbered silkscreen print from a limited edition of 100.
