Eclipse Season, Original on Canvas
Created for her Endless Summer exhibition at Saltdean Lido, Ruth Mulvieās Eclipse Season is one of the most personal works in the collection. Rich with symbolism, memory, and emotional resonance, the painting came together like a mosaic of deeply intimate truths.
At its core, Eclipse Season explores the themes of endings, new beginnings, and the quiet, transformative beauty found in lifeās transitional moments. A vast celestial body rises behind the Lido, evoking eclipses, shifting light, and the subtle, unseen ways in which life can change course.
The foreground is alive with female figures engaged in joyful, expressive movementāsynchronised swimmers reminiscent of the Aqua Lilies, and rollerskaters gliding effortlessly across the scene. Mulvie, who has long painted women, returns here to themes of strength, grace, and exuberance.
Scattered throughout are personal symbols that ground the work in lived experience. A tiger representing her son, who was born after a series of vivid tiger dreams during her pregnancy, stands as a quiet presence. Two dogs also appear: one encountered on a surf trip to Morocco, the other from a familiar Santa Monica retreat where she exhibits. These details serve as emotional touchstones, connecting beloved places and memories to the present.
Eclipse Season is a meditation on the shape-shifting nature of love, on finding joy in transformation, and on trusting the renewal that comes after loss. It's a celebration of resilience, memory, and the light that emerges from the shadows.
Please note, this artwork comes framed in a white wooden tray frame.
