Happy Tears, 1964, Skateboard

American artist, Roy Lichtenstein, was an icon of the Pop Art movement. His distinctive comic-book style and exploration of consumerism and modern culture have cemented him as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.   

Throughout his career, Lichtenstein frequently represented the classic archetypal beauties found in comic books and everyday advertising. Here, his subject is pictured with flawless make-up and manicured nails. 

Lichtenstein is renowned for creating ambiguity in his works and this piece is a prime example. By depicting his subject crying, but appearing happy, Lichtenstein invites us to make our own interpretation.
