Heaven Lent You A Soul Earth Will Lend You A Grave
Magnus Gjoen's work treads a fascinating line between humour and horror. By offering a modern take on old masterpieces, and transforming items typically associated with violence into delicate works of art, Gjoen challenges our preconceived notions of beauty.
Heaven Lent You a Soul Earth Will Lend a Grave is Gjoen's reinterpretation of one of the greatest examples of Baroque painting - "The Triumph of Divine Providence (and the Fulfilment of its Purposes under Pope Urban VIII)' by Petro da Cortona (1632-1639) found in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. Featuring more than 100 characters, it is a masterpiece of seventeenth-century painting and optical illusion.
By applying the modern form of the lenticular, the game of perspective created in the original painting is pushed to new heights.
This lenticular print is from a limited edition of 25, signed by the artist.
