Love Will Tear Us Apart

Haus Of Lucy, AKA Lucy Bryant, is a contemporary artist who appropriates found objects and images, and slips in quirky nods to contemporary culture. This piece is part of a series celebrating the ‘Madchester’ musical and cultural scene that first emerged in the late 80s, with bands like Joy Division and New Order.

Lucy reveals the story behind the piece:

“Julie and Paul’s eyes met over a snakebite and black at their local indie revival night and had their first snog to ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’. They went on to have several idyllic dates, bonding over their shared love of 80s/90s synth pop, the font ‘Futura’, The Young Ones and their mutual hatred of anchovies. Everything was perfect until a chance conversation established that Julie was ‘Team Barney’ whilst Paul was ‘Team Hooky’ all the way. How could they possibly make this work? It was worse than finding out your partner had voted Tory. But one night Ian Curtis came to Paul in a dream and told him and Julie to stop being so ridiculous because life’s too short to turn away from love due to an ancient feud that had nothing to do with them. And with that they got married, (walking down the aisle to Joy Division’s ‘Atmosphere’) and lived happily (well, as happy as two self-confessed introspective post punk fans can be) ever after.”
