Mamalia
Mamalia is a book by Marcelina Amelia – a Brighton-based contemporary artist known for exploring themes of self-acceptance, female sexuality, power, and motherhood.
The book chronicles Amelia’s experience of becoming a mother for the first time against a turbulent global backdrop of pandemic isolation and the All-Poland Women’s Strike, which was a reaction to tightening laws surrounding abortion.
The book rose from the artist’s strong need to address the universal topic of women being expected to ‘suffer in silence’. Via essays, photographs, sketches and paintings, Amelia explores the highs and lows of becoming a mother - ‘its creations, inspirations and frustrations.’
