Meat is Murder

Meat is Murder

Haus Of Lucy, AKA Lucy Bryant, is a contemporary artist who appropriates found objects and images, and slips in quirky nods to contemporary culture. This piece is part of a series celebrating the ā€˜Madchester’ musical and cultural scene that first emerged in the late 80s, with bands like Joy Division and New Order.

Lucy reveals the story behind the piece: ā€œMary loved lambs so muchĀ she had taken a job as a shepherdess at her local farm. Imagine her horror when she found out that as soon as the lambs hit three months old, they were taken away from their mums to be slaughtered. Mary thought the best way to protest against this cruelty (she had considered stealing all of the sheep but her garden wasn't big enough and besides, it was full ofĀ silver bells and cockleshells and pretty maids all in a row) was to sport her favourite Smiths T-shirt which declared 'Meat Is Murder' and wear it on the farm every day. Unfortunately for Mary, the farmer was almost blind so he couldn't actually see her t-shirt, but we won't tell Mary.ā€

Meat is Murder is an original piece by Haus of Lucy made from Your Nan's china ornament, polymer clay, ceramic paint and photographic paper.
