Operation Oil Freedom
This piece is one of many artworks produced by Shepard Fairey that emulates Soviet Propaganda in order to illustrate American excess. The piece draws attention to the oil industry and the unrelenting power of those who control it.
Wherever Fairey adopts this Soviet-style, he is imploring us to consider the consequences of blind obedience. He explains: ‘Manipulation and control may take subtler forms in the US, but that doesn’t make it less nefarious than the deception that was happening in Russia. I’ve tried to highlight that by depicting American themes in Soviet-style.’
The piece also depicts common motifs seen across his oeuvre, including stars, skulls, and the image that kick-started his career - André the Giant.
This silkscreen print is from a limited edition of 12, signed by the artist.
