Featuring ancient mythological beings, anatomical drawings, dream imagery and religious iconography, Dan Hillier is known for working with composite images and 19th-century engravings to create captivating, mystical works, blending Surrealism and Neo-Victoriana.
Padma was created for Hillier's 2016 solo exhibition, Ceremony. The show, which was held at the Saatchi Gallery, focused on symbolism and sacred imagery and explored themes of mystery, wonder and connection.
Padma is an incarnation of the Hindu goddess, Lakshmi, who is often depicted holding a lotus flower. In Hillier's piece, a mysterious female figure creates the iconic lotus flower shape with cupped hands made of a galaxy of stars.
