Philautia II, Original
Emma is a British mixed media artist whose layered, textural works blend sculpture, set design, and symbolism. Drawing on themes of dance, flight, and transformation, her art captures the drama and alchemy of the everyday.
This work is a continuation of Emmaās exploration of philautiaāthe concept of self love. While her first interpretation of this theme was a work on paper (still available as a print), this piece expands the idea further and serves as the centrepiece of the Loveās Lexicon collection. It represents what Emma considers the most vital form of loveāthe source from which all other positive expressions of love emerge.
Two quotes, deeply meaningful to the artist, are incorporated into the work:
āMay we love ourselves enough to love anotherā ā Bryony (a friend of the artist)
āā¦your one wild and precious lifeā ā from a poem by Mary Oliver
The piece conveys a sense of self-awareness and freedomāperhaps capturing the moment just before flight in a dream. It speaks to the idea that we are at the helm of our own lives and should treat ourselves with the same care and respect we wish to receive from others.
Created as a diptych, the two-panel format symbolises the duality of loving oneself as one would love another. It also offers practical benefits: the artwork is composed of two 50 x 100 cm panels, joined at the back with two simple nuts and boltsāno tools requiredāmaking transport and installation straightforward.
