Right Foot Blue, Diptych
Right Foot Blue, Diptych is a limited edition set of two prints, hand finished with gold and metal leaf by artist Gavin Mitchell.
From a very small edition of 20, printed on Hahnemuhle paper, both pieces are mounted on French Oak Panel and varnished with UV Resin, signed on reverse.
The panels themselves are inspired by the ancient Byobu Screens which were used in Japanese interiors such as Dojo, places of worship or contemplation. The panels are unframed so that when hung they appear to float on the walls. This is an oblique reference to Ukiyo-e (Pictures of the Floating World). A genre of Japanese art during the Edo period that parodied the hedonist lifestyle of the wealthy classes.
The artwork itself explores internal and external relationships juxtaposing cultural and material references from both the East and West.
