S for Sumo

Since his career began in the 1950s, Sir Peter Blake has been prolific, creating paintings, collage, typography and more inspired by his fascination with popular culture. Blake’s impact as the face of contemporary art is so significant, he is now known as the ‘Godfather of Pop Art.’

This piece hails from Peter Blake's 1991 Alphabet Series, in which he uses the letters of the alphabet to depict his pop art inspirations. Here, Blake compiles a selection of antique images of sumo wrestlers.
