Sister Science

Maria Rivans' striking collages are a celebration of the complexity of people and the world that we live in. Via her eye for creating perfect harmony from the chaos, Rivans both makes sense of our world, and invites the observer to venture across the threshold into the fantastical parallel universes of her creation.

This piece depicts Victoria Shaw, an Australia actress known as "The Face'. It is part of Rivans' pin-up series, inspired by the empowered women who made an impact on her as a child. Each piece provides a modern twist on icons of femininity, and in this instance each element of the collage is chosen to celebrate scientific discovery and to reflect the brilliance of the female brain.

Each of Rivans' collages are born from her collection of vintage ephemera, foraged from market stalls and second-hand shops. From selecting her chosen components to determining their perfect placement, each work of art is a labour of love, showcasing her sublime eye for colour and composition.
