Skate or Die Sevres
Magnus Gjoen’s evocative work treads a fascinating line between humour and horror. By offering a modern take on old masterpieces, and transforming items typically associated with violence into delicate works of art, Gjoen challenges our preconceived notions of beauty. His work combines Street Art, Pop Art and Fine Art sensibilities, and highlights humanity’s capacity for creating immense beauty one minute, and mass destruction the next.
For Skate or Die Sevres, Gjoen has decorated a skateboard deck with elaborate designs originally used in a type of 18th century porcelain called, Sévres. Back then, Sévres porcelain was one of the most highly-prized commodities in the world.
This silkscreen print of the deck was produced in conjunction with The Wallace Collection and Skateptych, who publish works from established artists on skateboard decks. It is from a limited edition of 99, signed by the artist.
