Stars, Original on Canvas

Ruth Mulvie is a British contemporary painter celebrated for her joyful, technicolour visions of leisure, memory, and escapism. Known for her bold palette and surreal compositions, Mulvie creates vivid, story-rich worlds that draw on the nostalgia of shared rituals and holiday pastimes.

Stars was created for her 2025 exhibition Endless Summer at Saltdean Lido.

The piece began with a single detail – a black and white photo of Saltdean Lido dotted with parasols topped with stars. Ruth reimagines the scene in radiant technicolour, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

The star shapes take on a whimsical quality, each umbrella like its own little planet under a blue summer sky. This is a painting about possibility, imagination, and the hazy blur between memory and magic.
