The Butterfly Man in Eastbourne, Homage to Damien Hirst

Since his career began in the 1950s, Sir Peter Blake has been prolific, creating paintings, collage, typography and more inspired by his fascination with popular culture. Blake’s impact as the face of contemporary art is so significant, he is now known as the ‘Godfather of Pop Art.’ 

This piece hails from Blake’s 2011 Homage to Damien Hirst collection, in which he celebrates his ‘friend and inspiration’, and Hirst’s love of using butterflies in his work.

The Butterfly Man, inspired by Hirst, is a motif seen in several of Blake’s portfolios, including his Venice Suite and Paris Suite. Here, Blake takes his Butterfly Man on a trip to the seaside, where a group of collaged promenaders are enjoying Eastbourne’s vintage charm.
