Venus, Original on Canvas
Ruth Mulvie created Venus for her 2025 exhibitionĀ Endless Summer at Saltdean Lido, drawing inspiration from the iconic Butlins Brighton building, formerly known as the Ocean Hotel. Once a dazzling Art Deco landmark, the hotel featured a striking red turret, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and the same fountain still gracing Saltdean Lido today.
Though the hotel was eventually closed and converted into residential flats, Mulvie discovered a captivating archival image of the pool at night that lingered in her mind. The lighting, symmetry, and atmosphere evoked the whimsical charm of Wes Andersonās The Grand Budapest Hotel, and became the catalyst for this painting's nostalgic, cinematic aesthetic.
Colour relationships are central to Venus, with vivid juxtapositions of blue and orange, yellow and purpleābold complementary tones that heighten the dreamlike quality of the scene. Warm glows of light spill from the windows, evoking the romance of summer nights and the allure of places remembered.
Venus is a love letter to lost places and beautiful architecture - an ode to memory, nostalgia, and the shimmering traces left behind when the lights finally go out.
Please note, this artwork comes framed in a white wooden tray frame.
