The Quest for Irma comprises five images, each reproduced from Phillipsā iconic 1973 gouache series. The works are connected to Phillips' 1969 opera Irma, in which the eponymous heroine symbolizes the ideal woman in the hero Grenvilleās quest. The inspiration for Irma also draws from Phillips' ongoing project A Humument, which he has been transforming since 1966, based on W.H. Mallock's 1892 Victorian novel A Human Document.
