Reigate’s dynamic, contemporary style combines simple cartoon motifs with complex and carefully balanced compositions. While the work exudes fun and energy at first glance, a closer look reveals a deeper, more unsettling narrative; a cartoon rabbit in the center appears to be hanging from a bunch of balloons. Reigate may be commenting on the perceived greed of the contemporary art market, turning art into a commodity for profit. One character’s blacked-out mouth could symbolize the stifling of creativity, the suppression of artistic freedom, or art’s ability to deceive. The juxtaposition of dark imagery with childlike aesthetics delivers a powerful message about the loss of innocence.
